Mods vs Rockers
It’s 1964 in Britain and the BBC headlines read “Mods and Rockers jailed after seaside riots”. These two youth subcultures were at odds with each other and the legend of Mods vs Rockers was born.
The Mods were the well-dressed youth of the 1960’s and were up to date with the latest fashion and music trends. They were clean cut kids and were fans of the latest music of their era. They could be heard listening to bands such as The Beatles, The Yardbirds or The Rolling Stones. Their preferred method of transportation was the scooter which they considered hip and fashionable.
The Rockers on the other hand were the scruffy rebels whose subculture was centered upon motorcycling. They wore leather jackets, boots and pompadour hairstyles. Their music of choice was 1950’s Rock and Roll, music from Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Gene Vincent. The Rockers were the descendants of the 1950’s Ton-Up Boys.
Their conflict became known as the Mods vs Rockers. The Mods vs Rockers legend is still celebrated peacefully today in many cities, throughout the world. Groups of motorcycle and scooter enthusiasts meet in predetermined locations and come dressed in period clothing and listen to period music to recreate the Mods vs Rockers legend. There is even a very successful yearly event here in my city, Toronto www.modsandrockerstoronto.com
You may now be asking “so what does this have to do with wet shaving??”
Well, to pay tribute to this obscure but cool scene, we created two unique soaps based on these sub cultures and named them ‘Mods’ and ‘Rockers’.
Our ‘Mods’ shaving soap has a woody aromatic cologne type scent. It is a refined and sophisticated scent containing notes of Bergamot, Mint, Lavender, Sandalwood, Jasmine, Cedar, Musk and Vanilla. The scent is very noticeable from the moment you unscrew the jar and evolves wonderfully when lathered. ‘Mods’ shaving soap is a scent that is suited for someone who is trendy and clean cut. It’s a scent that evokes thoughts of riding a scooter while wearing a fine suit darting in and out of traffic through the busy streets of London.
If you like to match your scents, I’ve found that Mods pairs really well with Pinaud Clubman aftershave and the now discontinued but still available ‘Burberry Men’ by Burberry cologne (the red box). In fact, this is the scent the soap was based on. In my opinion, this combination goes incredibly well together.
Our ‘Rockers’ shaving soap can be described as sweet and dirty. The scent contains notes of Raspberry, Lemon, Tanned Leather, Fresh Muddy Dirt, Moist Mossy Notes, Tahitian Vanilla and Tropical Flowers. Certainly a strange combination, but it blends oh so well! The primary note you notice when opening the jar is Raspberry and Lemon, but after a few moments, the Leather and Dirt come through, not too strongly, but just enough get your attention. Rockers is a scent that is meant to bring out your wild side. The scent of Leather and Dirt pay homage to the bikers of the 60’s while the Raspberry, Lemon and Vanilla lend a softer note to the soap. This scent evokes thoughts of kick starting your vintage Triton motorcycle, putting on your goggles and giving the throttle a confident twist. The smell of your leather jacket and the sound of your roaring exhaust fills your senses. Rockers shaving soap was inspired by Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather cologne.
So it’s time to ask yourself, are you a Mod or a Rocker? Maybe you’re a bit of both, perhaps a weekday Mod and a weekend Rocker!
Mods and Rockers soap will be sold individually and will also be available as a set. The set will be sold at a discount. These soaps are hand made by a very skilled Canadian Artisan and will be available on our website in the coming weeks.
It has been a while since we posted our last blog entry. We've been busy at DeLuxe Shaving Company with our launch, keeping up with orders and trying to get our products known in the wet shaving community. Hard work but it's a lot of fun!
One of the projects we have been working on is our new aftershave balm. We call it "Atom Balm". This balm uses only the highest quality ingredients. Atom Balm contains Aloe Vera, Sunflower Seed Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Oats, Vitamin E and Shea Butter.
Atom Balm is soothing, moisturizing and hydrating which aids in conditioning your skin after the damaging effects of shaving. It has been formulated to be perfectly suitable for cold or hot weather use. For an extra cooling kick in the summer, we added a serious dose of menthol in our Cool Daddy-O Atom Balm.
We're offering nine balm scents to compliment our shaving cream lineup and provide our customers with a complete DeLuxe shaving experience.
Very little product is needed to get that perfect face feel. We suggest applying one or two pumps into your damp hands, rub your hands together then apply to either a dry or damp face. Keeping your hands damp helps distribute the balm more evenly and makes it easier to apply. Remember, a little goes a long way.
Atom Balm will be released Saturday, August 1st.

Being involved in a start-up business has been a very exciting experience. There have been many challenges along the way but we finally made it to our Grand Opening!
We have learned many lessons so far and we're sure to learn a lot more as we develop and mature as a business.
Thanks to all of you that encouraged us through this experience. We received many supportive emails and messages that kept us going when things got difficult.
Our Grand Opening promotion is our way of saying thanks to all of you who have shown interest in our product while it was only a bunch of scent descriptions, interesting names and computer generated images.
We hope DeLuxe Shaving Co. finds a permanent place in your shaving routine.

After many repeated requests, we are finally ready to announce our shaving cream product names. Deciding on these names took a lot of effort, we had over ten names selected for each cream scent. Slowly we whittled the list down and arrived at what we think are the perfect names for our initial product release. The labels are now at the printers and we've approved the proofs. We've past the point of no return!
Here they are in no particular order:
There you have it, our first product lineup. We'll be announcing the logo designs and scent descriptions in the very near future. Stay tuned!

DeLuxe Shaving Co. is proud to announce that we've been making significant progress over the last week. Our first release of shaving cream scents have been selected and our first order of jars have arrived. Our skilled artisan has begun scenting the creams and filling the containers one at a time. Our creams are all hand made and therefore this process will take several more weeks.
We have selected gloss white for both our jars and lids for a clean and modern appearance. Our logo design for each scent is now complete and we'll be sending them off to the printers this weekend. We're very happy with the progress we've made so far. There will be plenty of scents to choose from, the jars look great and we think the labels have a nice retro look to them. We hope you'll like them too.
I've posted a few photos for your viewing pleasure!

I went to the post office yesterday afternoon to pick up my shipment of shaving cream samples. My soap maker has put together many expertly crafted variations of scents for me to choose from. I still find it incredible that such small variations in the essential oils can dramatically change the way the shaving cream smells.
When I got home, I quickly opened the packaging and proceeded to line up the small containers. I flipped open the lid of each one and took a sniff. I set aside the ones that instantly grabbed me.
Next, I filled my Moss Scuttle with hot water and began to lather each cream. One by one, I loaded my Plisson brush and proceeded to lather my face. I did this for every cream, including the ones that did not make the cut at first sniff. I often read that people make decisions on whether they like a soap or cream just by the scent in the jar, but to truly appreciate how the scent of the oils interact with water and heat, the cream must lathered.
As the evening progressed, my bathroom filled with various shaving cream scents such as oranges, lavender, oakmoss, cedar, leather, vanilla, tobacco, vetiver, rose, lilly, menthol....etc...etc.... so hard to decide!
After several hours of lathering, rinsing and repeating, I narrowed down my choices. It wasn't easy but the job is now done.
I'll be announcing the first release of shaving cream scents shortly.
